Frederick, MD, January 8, 2014 — Patriot Technologies and RADiFlow today announced they have received a conditional grant from the Israeli/U.S. Binational Industrial Research and Development Foundation (BIRD).
The two companies will cooperate in the development and marketing of a unique Secure Smart Grid Automation Communication Solution. This solution will provide integrated cyber security measures for the interaction between the smart grid control center and the remote distributed automation devices. Such a secure platform will enable the reliable and secure monitoring and control of the distributed smart grid assets.
The project’s goal is to close the gap between existing smart grid networking solutions, which only have standard security mechanisms, to solutions with the required adaptations to the specific needs of the smart grid distributed automation application. This gap can be seen by the recent use cases published in July 2013 by the NCCoE (National Cyber-security Center of Excellence) regarding “Securing Networked Infrastructure for the Energy Sector”.
The proposed solution will be specified jointly by the security experts of both companies leveraging the expertise of RADiFlow engineers in securing utility deployments and the U.S. experience of Patriot’s engineers. “This grant is very important to Patriot Technologies in our efforts to be on the forefront of cyber security solutions,” states Steve Keefe, President, Patriot Technologies. “The funding allows us to address the U.S. Executive Order to improve critical infrastructure security which represents one of the most serious national security challenges.”
Ilan Barda, RADiFlow CEO, commented, “The attacks are more sophisticated and complex now, therefore we must leverage our experience and keep developing innovative solutions that are ahead of the threats. The BIRD grant allows us to do so.”
The Secure Smart Grid Automation Communication Solution will offer a unique firewall for high secure connectivity between the distributed automation assets, including:
- Robust yet secure distributed communication over various network types
- Protection against insider attacks between the distributed sites and the control center
- Integration with leading SIEM (security information and event management) tools for user authentication and authorization and incident management
